When the weather starts to warm up, anyone in the northern climes longs for sea air and waves. The temps start inching up and the desire for sand between the toes can prompt an “any beach is a beach” attitude. But there are towns across the country that have beautiful beaches, laid-back vibes, and intoxicating views. New Jersey is a state that has a lot of prime, oceanfront real estate and one of the greatest spots is along the state’s most southerly point—Cape May. This beach town is perfect for those who like a bit of historical architecture with their beach time. Envision a slice of Victorian England—cottages and hotels with an appropriate vibe of throwback. The sidewalks are made of red bricks, perfect for taking a walk to see the colorful architecture or booking a tour by horse-drawn carriage. On the town’s main drag, you’ll find several locally owned shops selling saltwater taffy and other local items. A perfect place for accommodations is The Chalfonte—but even if you don’t stay here, you have to at least set aside an evening to try their fried chicken dinner out on the wraparound porch. Live music plays most nights.
Rhode Island is the smallest state but it’s big on charm. In fact, Newport was the place to be come summer for the earliest of America’s rich and famous. These industry titans called Newport their summer home away from home—remember the Astors? Jacob Astor was on the Titanic. And what about the Vanderbilts? Cornelius Vanderbilt was a railroad tycoon whose legendary “cottage” is located in Newport, called The Breakers. This 70-room estate was built in the Italian Renaissance style. You can see if on the Cliff Walk, a stroll by this and other mansions of the era through the bluffs of Newport. Continue walking till you get to Easton’s Beach. The locals here call this First Beach and it’s perfect for families. There’s a lobster roll and lemonade stand if the mood strikes. Depending when you visit, you might get to catch the Newport Jazz Festival or the Newport Folk Festival.
