Sometimes, you choose a destination based on the sights or activities available. Sometimes it’s the shopping. But it’s okay to choose a destination based on its gastronomy alone. And if you’re vegan, you know — trying to find a place to eat on vacation can prove a bit challenging. Denver certainly has an abundance of things to do, so it checks off all those boxes, but this is one place even vegans are sure to be well-fed. In this article, we are tackling the Denver vegan food scene.
On the east side of downtown, the ambiance in our first location is straight out of Thailand, somewhere on a road in the jungle — not at all what you’d expect in the midst of a bustling metropolis. Bang Up to the Elephant (quite the name, too!) has a funky vibe, where every colorful booth feels like an old temple ruin. Check out the Chickpea Coconut Curry and have a Dirty Banana — it’s spiced rum, Kahlua, and vanilla extract poured over a banana — *chef’s kiss*!
When you think Italian food (mangia, mangia!), you might not think vegetarian, much less vegan, but Cranelli’s just south in Lone Tree surprises with its vegetarian options. Candied pecans, romaine lettuce, and strawberries combine for a delicious salad, and Cranelli’s is known all over Denver for its garlic breadsticks in the shape of knots. While not vegan, many of the diner’s main menu items have vegetarian options and add cheese for the protein.
Finally, not far from the Cherry Creek Mall is a completely plant-based restaurant called Native Foods. But mark these words — plant-based does not mean flavorless. For instance, try the jalapeño cheese burger (made with plant-based “meat”, of course) — it’s two patties, diced peppers, and a spicy cheese with pimentos. Here, you can dine in or carry out.
