City of Rocks National Reserve in Almo, Idaho

Imagine a “city” of silence. Instead of the constant noise pollution of millions and tall buildings scraping the sky, imagine a city of rocks – tall spires like steeples. Well, it does exist in the back country of Idaho.

Rock climbers, hikers, and overall adventurous spirits are attracted to the City of Rocks National Reserve for the view. Inspirational scenes, abundant opportunities to study geology, and Old West remnants are calling you.

If Almo is where you’re headed, be sure to call ahead and pre-plan your getaway. A place to hang your hat at the end of the day is important, and if you plan to stay within the park, it’s necessary to reserve your spot before you arrive. If you’re planning a summer stay, book as soon as possible because these dates tend to be booked several months in advance. There’s a campground inside the park if you have your own RV. If you’d like to stay in a bit more glamorous digs, however, consider the Castle Rock Lodge, The Bunkhouse, or the park’s Willow Glamping Yurt. If you don’t plan on staying with the reserve, there’s lodging outside City of Rocks at the Old Homestead or City of Rocks Retreat.

Almo, Idaho isn’t a big city, which is nice. It’s in keeping with the laid-back solitude of the City of Rocks. You won’t find any chain stores here, but you will find the Tracy General Store (208-824-5570), Almo Creek Outpost (208-824-5577), and Durfee Hot Springs (208-824-5071). In the event of vehicle troubles, Rock City Repair and Supply has you covered for tires, auto repairs, parts, or other services (208-824-5510).
